Agriculture scientists in Gumla are introducing new farm technologies of the Indian Council of Agricsulture Research (ICAR) in villages by imparting training to farmers, carrying out farm demonstration, assessment and refinement at peasant's fields.
The scientists, associated with the Krishi Vygyan Kendra (KVK), on Tuesday also celebrated 85th Foundation Day of the ICAR at Bishunpur - 50km off the district town of Gumla. Over 125 progressive farmers from Gumla and neighbouring Simdega districts were briefed about the farm techniques to enable them to apply the techniques on fields. Farmers like Ravi Oraon of Sato village, Mandeep Yadav of Sisai block and Shatryghan from Aadar village interacted with the scientists at the meet. Farmers, too, feel that they have been benefited by the new agro-methodologies brought to them by KVK.
Agro-scientist Sunil Kumar advised the farmers to grow their crops after proper seed selection and choose seasonal varieties of crops like vegetables to get better produce. Niranjan Kumar, an animal husbandry scientist, asked the farmers to update technology for dairy, goat rearing and other allied activities. "Production of vermin compost and viable farm activities can produce good ventures for rural women," said another scientist Nisha Tiwari.
ICAR has set up 631 KVKs and increased its research centres to 53 in the country. Gumla KVK is one of best 100 KVKs in the country and a leading one in the state. Objectives of the ICAR are training programmes for farmers, demonstrations in the fields and assessment and refinement in order to introduce new agro-techniques to farmers fields, said Niraj Kumar Vaishya of Gumla KVK.
"We have reached all 159 panchayats in the district through introduction of at least three technologies of the ICAR. New farm technologies include system of rice intensification (SRI), drip irrigation, organic farming, introduction of new cropping techniques, integrated pests and nutrient management," Vaishya said.
KVK is trying to make the district self-reliant in seed production by forming seed production committees of farmers in the villages and has supplied seeds to district agriculture department in addition to the farmers, he added.
